World Language Pilot Program Grant Recipients

The following schools received a World Language Pilot Program grant. Brief descriptions of their planned projects are listed below.

Yinghua Academy will develop a Mandarin Chinese language immersion curriculum that can be easily adapted to a Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) program model, an age-appropriate Literacy Assessment Instrument and a Mandarin Chinese Teacher Mentorship Program.

Twin Cities German Immersion School will develop thematic kits for kindergarten through 4th grade and design and field-test a professional development program through which FLES assistants will model immersion teaching techniques.

Minneapolis Public Schools will build a longer, articulated sequence of learning to develop communicative proficiency and intercultural competence in Arabic, as well as support the professional development of a new middle-school teacher of Arabic.

Fridley Public Schools will develop an interdisciplinary approach to Chinese language instruction using language and cultural immersion experiences for all language students. Fridley also will train staff in immersion and interdisciplinary methodology to help deliver effective world language instruction with other school districts across the state of Minnesota.

Cass Lake-Bena will develop an Ojibwe language pilot program, targeting interested 9th-grade students. The class will immerse the students in Ojibwe from the start by utilizing speakers of the language from the community as mentors to both the students and teachers. Another component will make the learning a consistent process, extending the teaching into a hands-on summer immersion experience with many other language learners.
