National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

NAEP, also known as “The Nation’s Report Card” is the only national assessment of what students know and can do in various subject areas.  NAEP assesses students in:

  • Mathematics
  • Writing
  • Geography
  • Reading
  • Arts
  • Economics
  • Science
  • Civics
  • U.S. History

NAEP is given to a representative sample of students in each State. Therefore individual scores for students, schools or districts are not reported. Data is only reported at the State and National level.

The Main NAEP includes assessments in all 9 subjects following frameworks set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). These assessments are given in grades 4, 8 and 12 although not all subjects and grades are assessed each year. Only Mathematics, Reading, Science and Writing are reported at the State level, all other subjects are reported at the National level only. View the assessment schedule on the National Assessment Governing Board Website.  See Related LInks.

The Long-Term Trend NAEP is given nationally in Mathematics and Reading. This study has data back to 1970 and assesses students at age 9, 13 and 17 every four years. Other NAEP Studies include the High School Transcript Study, the National Indian Education Survey and other studies.

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 2010
From January 25 through March 5, 2010, NAEP will administer national assessments in civics, geography and U.S. history at grades 4, 8, and 12. Concurrently, a national pilot test in writing will also be administered at grades 4, 8, and 12. The grade 8 and 12 writing pilot will be computer-based. NAEP will also conduct a special study in mathematics at grades 4 and 8. Because these assessments and studies will be conducted at the national level only, no state results will be reported. National results for the civics, geography, and U.S. history assessments will be available in 2011.
