Reading First Subgrant Schools
MDE awards Reading First subgrant programs to eligible districts through a competitive process. At this time, 29 Minnesota schools have completed Round 1 of Reading First; 24 Minnesota schools are participating in Round 2 of Reading First, and will continue through August 2008. At this time, no commitment for future funding of Reading First has been made by Congress.

Minnesota’s Reading First Professional Development Program
Minnesota has selected the University of Minnesota to provide professional development in reading to all K-3 teachers participating in Reading First at the subgrant schools. The content of professional development centers around the main elements of scientifically-based reading research, which include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension and the support topics of English Language Learners, Special Education students, working with families, early reading intervention, motivation, assessment and data reflection and sustainability. This training is accomplished through all-staff Institutes, weekly study groups, monthly whole group meetings and school Leadership Team meetings and workshops. University of Minnesota staff (.4 external facilitator and .2 data collector) are assigned to each subgrant school to guide the implementation of the Minnesota Reading First professional development program.
