Parent Notification

Parent Notification

The No Child Left Behind Act requires districts that do not make adequate yearly progress (AYP) to promptly notify parents of each student enrolled in the district in an understandable and uniform format and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand. The notice must explain the reasons for the identification, what actions are being taken and how parents can be involved.

When a school is identified for school improvement, corrective action, or restructuring, the district must notify all the parents of the children attending that school. The notification must give an explanation of what the identification means, how the school compares in terms of academic achievement to other schools in the district, the reasons for the identification, what the district/school is doing to address the problem of low achievement, how parents can become involved in addressing the academic issues that caused the district/school to be identified for school improvement and an explanation of what the state Department of Education or school district is doing to help the district/school address the achievement problem. A school in stage 1 of improvement must explain to parents their option to transfer their student (see the Request to Transfer Form). A school in stages 2-4 must also include the option of supplemental educational services (see the Supplemental Educational Services Enrollment Form).
