The Minnesota Test of Academic Skills (MTAS) is Minnesota’s alternate assessment in reading and mathematics for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. The MTAS serves several purposes:

  • It meets No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements to provide an alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards that are aligned with grade level academic standards.
  • It promotes access to the general education curriculum for students with significant cognitive disabilities, as required by NCLB and the Individuals with Disabilities Education ACT (IDEA).
  • It provides a tool for educators to measure student progress on academic standards in reading and mathematics.
