Visiting Teacher Programs

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) supports the hiring of teachers from China to teach Chinese in Minnesota classrooms when licensing requirements have been met. MDE has established a relationship with the Hanban (Chinese Language Council International) in Beijing, China, and works with the Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota develop procedures to screen, hire and support visiting teachers.

MDE recognizes the need for Minnesota school districts to hire visiting teachers to serve as full-time contracted teachers to supplement current district initiatives. The department can facilitate the selection of candidates, sponsor visiting teachers (J1 Visas), and provide assistance as necessary to place Chinese teachers in Minnesota classrooms.

Teachers hired through the Hanban program teach in urban and rural, immersion and STEM schools, and at all levels.  At this time, MDE can only sponsor full-time teachers who have been hired to teach in a Minnesota school.
