First Grade Preparedness
First Grade Preparedness is a full-day, everyday kindergarten program and includes some programming for 4-year olds. The goal is to ensure that every child, before first grade, develops the abilities necessary to read and succeed in school. Schools' eligibility to participate in the program is based on the number of their students receiving free and reduced lunch.
National research emphasizing the importance of early learning to later school success is the foundation of First Grade Preparedness. For many children, it is an extension of school-based early childhood programs that Minnesota has created and funded. These early childhood programs include Early Childhood Family Education, School Readiness, Head Start and Early Childhood Screening.
