SUBJECT: Household Contact Procedures
This information applies to organizations that sponsor the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) at multiple childcare sites (homes or centers). This information does not apply to adult day care centers or independent (one-site) childcare centers.
“Household contact” is defined in program regulations as: A contact made by a sponsoring organization or a State agency to an adult member of a household with a child in a family day care home or a child care center in order to verify the attendance and enrollment of the child and the specific meal service(s) which the child routinely receives while in care. [7 CFR 226.2]
CACFP regulations were revised [7 CFR 226.16(d)(5)] effective April 2005 to require that sponsoring organizations use a household contact system developed by the state agency (MDE), when necessary, in monitoring their sponsored sites. Household contacts are required when the site’s claim or other information raises questions about whether the claim may exceed the number of meals actually served to enrolled and participating children. The household contact procedures describe the types of information that may raise these questions.
The Household Contact Procedures developed by MDE Food and Nutrition Service are posted on the MDE website.
