Menu Planning and Meal Patterns


* Dietary Guidelines for Americans - These guidelines are the cornerstone of Federal nutrition policy and nutrition education activities. They are jointly issued and updated every 5 years by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS).

* Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs (USDA) - Click on Pen & Ink Changes (2003) for updates. In 2002 this was redesigned and updated, including color-coded tabs for each section, pictures, new charts and graphics.

* Menu Planner for Healthy School Meals (USDA) - Nutrition resource with chapters on meeting dietary guidelines and nutrition goals, food-based menu planning and nutrient standards, nutrient analysis, and basic principles and processes of menu planning.

* Menu Planning in the National School Lunch Program (USDA) - Schools must select one of the four menu planning approaches for healthful and appealing meals.

* Menu Planning in the School Breakfast Program (USDA) - Schools must select one of the five menu planning approaches for healthful and appealing meals.

* Menu Planning Approaches - Alternate (USDA) -  Calorie and nutrient requirements for meals planned using alternate menu planning approaches for the School Meals Programs - November 2007 memo.

* Offer versus Serve (USDA) - Training manual for school districts to use with their schools. It contains training packets for traditional food-based, enhanced food-based, and nutrient standard menu planning.
