Summer Food Service Program

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) helps local organizations operate programs combining nutritious meals and healthy activities for children during the summer months when school-year nutrition and activity programs are not active. SFSP gives children food they need to grow, play and learn; helps families stretch their food-buying dollars; and keeps children mentally engaged so they return to school ready to learn.

In Minnesota, more than 90 eligible sponsors operate over 420 SFSP sites across the state that serve around 1.5 million meals, receiving federal reimbursement for the costs of meals served. The most recent list of open SFSP sites by county is available below.

The Minnesota Department of Education’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) actively seeks additional sponsors each year for underserved communities needing summer meal sites. Eligible sponsoring organizations include public and private nonprofit schools, colleges or universities, residential and nonresidential camps, migrant sites and other nonprofit organizations who want to combine a meal program for children 18 and under with a summer activity program.

Interested in becoming an SFSP sponsor? Organizations interested in sponsoring SFSP sites should view the map of areas of the state that are eligible for federal reimbursement for summer meals on the Eligibility section linked at the right of this page, fill out the annual Interest Survey (or Declaration of Intent for renewing sponsors) on this page and visit the Application Materials section linked at the right for more information about how to apply.

2010 Summer Meals Kick-Off Event March 2: FNS invites interested schools and nonprofit organizations to its 2010 Summer Meals Kick-Off Event on Tuesday, March 2 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) in Roseville. Current sponsors of SFSP and Seamless Summer programs (for organizations that also sponsor National School Lunch and Breakfast programs during the school year) will share their experience and knowledge, and FNS staff will be available to provide information and answer questions. See more details in the Calendar section via the link at the top of this page.
