Library Statistics
State Library Services' mission is to provide accurate library statistical information about public libraries, regional library systems, school media centers/libraries and the state library administrative agency. The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) State Library Services Division collects library program statistics and financial data. Policy makers, regional library administrators and the general public can use the statistical data to plan and evaluate library development and services.
Minnesota Public Library Statistics
The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) State Library Services division collects Minnesota public library program statistics and financial data. Policymakers, regional library administrators, and the general public can use this data to evaluate and plan public library development and services.
Public libraries can develop charts and tables comparing their library program outputs with those of other U.S. public libraries using the online service Bibliostat Connect*, funded through the federal Library Services and Technology Act.
Individual public library annual reports for 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 are available.
Minnesota law (Minn. Statutes 132.13) requires all local library boards to file annual reports with MDE.

School Library Media Center Statistics
Nationally recognized research over the past twenty years demonstrates that school library media center programs support a strong educational system and promote higher student test scores. In order to document the status of Minnesota school libraries, a Library Services and Technology Act grant was provided in 2002 and 2004 to Metronet for collection of statistics from K-12 schools. Survey results are linked here. Other links include the National Center for Education Statistics school sample survey results and the Colorado Library Research Service that conducted related research over the last twenty years and collects other school studies.
