Competency Area E-Providing Instructional Support

All too often paraprofessionals are provided an orientation and then left to carry out instructional and other tasks without the appropriate support or guidance. In the state needs assessment, a substantial number of paraprofessionals reported being responsible for the student's program when that is the responsibility of the teacher. Paraprofessionals need feedback on their performance, support in assisting the teacher in the use of accommodations, and direction when working in independent situations (e.g., community settings). Teachers and other individuals who direct the work of paraprofessionals are critical contributors to the success of the paraprofessional role overall. By effectively guiding and supporting paraprofessionals, instructional teams can provide better services to students.

Competencies

  1. Provides regular, constructive feedback regarding each paraprofessional's work performance.
  2. Encourages the involvement of paraprofessionals in setting goals and planning, implementing, and evaluating program and instructional activities.
  3. Coordinates collaboration among paraprofessionals and other staff, such as specialists.
  4. Efficiently manages resources related to student instruction, such as instructional materials, physical space, and personnel.
  5. Supports paraprofessionals in using modified instructional plans and materials to accommodate the exceptional learning needs of various students.
  6. Provides assistance and direction for paraprofessionals who work in independent capacities, such as classrooms, job mentoring, community transition support, work-study, transportation, etc.
