Special education external experts assist external providers and school teams in continuous school improvement. As school teams create and implement their school improvement plan, the external special education expert may be contracted to assist with the review of academic and demographic data, setting goals for the coming years and determining particular strategies to reach those goals.

Schools and districts contract directly with special education external experts, not through the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). Principals and external providers are encouraged to review resumes of many special education external experts to find a good match for the particular Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) status of their school and to interview the special education external experts carefully before deciding which external expert is right for their school.
