The Green Ribbon Schools Awards from the U.S. Department of Education recognizes schools, districts and higher education institutions that save energy and reduce operating costs, create environmentally friendly learning spaces, promote student health, and provide incorporate environmental sustainability into the curriculum. Awardees receive a plaque and a flag for the school, local recognition, and an invitation to the national ceremony in Washington, D.C. The program is described at the Green Ribbon Schools website.

The Minnesota Department of Education, in cooperation with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, nominates candidates based on an application process. The tentative timeline for 2014-15 includes the availability of the application in mid-September, submission deadline in early January, and announcement of the award in April. Green Schools Tour September 23-24, 2014
The U.S. Department of Education is conducting tours of schools with exemplary practices in reducing environmental impact and costs, improving the health and wellness of students and staff, and providing quality environmental education. All participating schools have received the Green Ribbon Schools or District Award. Education leaders, public officials, media, businesses and the public are invited to participate in any or all of the events.
The tours will be engaging and will highlight facilities, food service, recycling, student projects, school gardens, outdoor learning spaces and much more. The Discussion Session on Wednesday will feature additional schools and programs through interactive conversation.
