Supplemental Educational Services (Tutoring)

Under NCLB, low-income families could enroll their child in supplemental educational services if their child attends a Title I school that has not made adequate yearly progress (AYP) for three years. The term "supplemental educational services" or SES refers to free extra academic help, such as tutoring or remedial help, that is provided to students in reading, language arts, and math. This extra help does not take time out from a student's regular class time. It can be provided before or after school, on weekends, or in the summer.

Minnesota ESEA Flexibility Waiver Update
The Minnesota Department of Education requested a waiver, the Minnesota ESEA Flexibility Request, and received approval on Thursday, February 09, 2012, which caused several No Child Left Behind (NCLB) provisions to be waived, among them:

  • Sanctions on schools resulting from not making AYP
  • Mandatory financial set-asides for School Choice and Supplemental Educational Services
  • Identification of schools as in need of improvement, corrective action and restructuring

Therefore, Minnesota will no longer be required to comply with the NCLB statutes regarding Supplemental Educational Services (SES). As a result, there will be no SES application round for the coming year. The current list of approved providers will remain posted through the end of school year 2011-12.
