Library Media Specialist Licensing Requirements
According to Minnesota Rule 8710.4550, a library media specialist is authorized to:
Provide instruction that is designed to provide information skills to students in kindergarten through grade 12;
§ Collaborate and consult with other classroom teachers for the purpose of integrating information skills and technology tools with content teaching; and
Administer media center operations, programming and resources to students in kindergarten through grade 12.
In order to receive a professional Minnesota license, an applicant must:
1) Hold a baccalaureate degree from a college or university that is regionally accredited by the association for the accreditation of colleges and secondary schools;
2) Demonstrate the Standards of Effective Practice for licensing in accordance with Minnesota Rule 8710.2000; and
3) Show verification of completing a Board of Teaching preparation program leading to licensure of library media specialists in accordance with 8700.7600, subpart 3.
Please Note: The completion of a Board of Teaching preparation program typically requires 28-36 semester credits and involves coursework that addresses the following:
§ School curriculum across grade levels and disciplines;
§ Ability to plan and conduct a sequential integrated program of instruction in the use of information;
§ Reference and online services;
§ Educational media leadership;
§ Educational resources for children and young adults;
§ Collaboration with teachers to meet student learning goals;
§ Student and staff development that use research technologies;
§ Elementary and secondary pedagogy ; and
§ Early and ongoing clinical experiences with kindergarten and primary, intermediate, middle level and high school students within a range of educational programming models.
