SAINT PAUL— Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius announced today that Kevin McHenry has been appointed to serve as the new Assistant Commissioner at the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE.) McHenry, who has served as the department’s Director of Government Relations since October of 2011, replaces Dr. Rose Chu, who recently accepted a position at Metro State University.
As MDE’s Director of Government Relations, McHenry was responsible for all legislative issues pertaining to education, including development of the agency’s legislative agenda and analysis of the impacts of proposed legislation. Prior to joining MDE, Mr. McHenry worked as a Government Relations Specialist at Metro Cities and in the Minnesota Senate as Committee Administrator for the Education Policy and Finance Committee.
Leading the department’s government relations division will be Daron Korte, who has served in the role of Deputy Director since October of 2011. In addition to coordinating legislative activity, Korte, an attorney, will provide legal analysis and counsel to the agency. Before joining MDE, Daron Korte was the Committee Administrator for the Minnesota State Senate E-12 Education Committee and worked for Chicago Public Schools.
“Both Kevin and Daron have been instrumental in the significant legislative and policy successes we’ve achieved over the past several years,” said Commissioner Cassellius. “Their extensive experience in developing education policy and their ability to bring consensus amidst diverse perspectives will help us move forward to effective implementation of the important reforms that Governor Dayton and the legislature worked so hard to enact. Equally important, their passion and commitment to serving our students and our state make them natural choices to help lead our agency.”
Both McHenry and Korte assume their new responsibilities immediately, rounding out an executive team that includes Deputy Commissioner Jessie Montano, Assistant Commissioners Elia Bruggeman and Rose Hermodson and Chief of Staff Charlene Briner.
