Bullying Prevention Task Force to Hold Listening Session for Students in Metro

On Monday, June 18, a listening session for students will be held at the Minnesota Department of Education in Roseville. This will be the sixth listening session held by the task force. Members of the Governor’s Task Force for the Prevention of Bullying are convening listening sessions across the state to hear from Minnesota students, educators and community members on the issue of bullying and school climate.

This listening session will take place at the Minnesota Department of Education and offer students an opportunity to weigh-in on this important issue. The listening session will be held in Conference Center A, 9:30-11:30 a.m. See the attached announcement for additional details. Please distribute this information to students who may be interested in attending.

Any students interested in attending the listening session should contact Nancy Riestenberg at nancy.riestenberg@state.mn.us or 651-582-8433.

ACTION ITEMS

Levy for Leasing Administrative Space

The 2012 Omnibus E-12 Education Act (Laws of Minnesota for 2012, Chapter 239), Article 2, Section 18, amends Minnesota Statutes, section 126C.40, subdivision 1, by adding a paragraph (j).

See the attached memorandum from Tom Melcher, director of School Finance Division, which outlines the criteria that the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) will use in approving levies for leasing administrative space under this new paragraph, and provides instructions regarding the information that must be submitted by districts requesting this levy authority.

For assistance with questions, contact Bill Kiesow at bill.kiesow@state.mn.us or 651-582-8801.

Annual Verification of District and School Site Information for FY13

See the memorandum from Matthew Porett, chief information officer, regarding the above-mentioned matter. Through the District and School Site Verification online data submission process, your district’s Site Verification Coordinator must notify the Minnesota Department of Education of new or closed sites, and to review and update school and district contact information. Notify MDE by June 1, 2012, if your district intends to open or close sites for the upcoming school year. To ensure that data collections, payments, and reports are correct, district and school site information must be certified by August 1, 2012.

See the attached list of Site Verification Coordinators. (Note that this list may not reflect all updates made during this week.)

For assistance with questions, contact Mary Pat Olsen at (651) 582-8624 or mde.school-verify@state.mn.us.

MISCELLANEOUS

Legislative Summaries Available

This past session several bills were introduced, heard in committee, debated on the floor and eventually signed into law. Some issues are familiar as they were in the press often. Other issues may not have been in the news but are important for superintendents and others working in schools to know about.

The Government Relations team at MDE produced summaries of all education initiatives that were signed into law by Governor Dayton, and identified key agency contacts for each provision. Two documents can be found on MDE’s legislative page . One document covers all the initiatives included in the education omnibus bill, and another details all education bills that traveled and passed on their own. If you have further questions on any bill or legislative questions, please contact Kevin McHenry at 651-582-8292 or kevin.mchenry@state.mn.us.
