• 2012 School Leadership Summit: Minnesota on the Move – August 7-8

Breaking News: We’ve just received confirmation that Governor Dayton will be presenting opening remarks on August 7. Please join me at the 2012 School Leadership Summit: Minnesota on the Move on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 7-8, at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest (formerly the Northland Inn) in Brooklyn Park. (This has been known previously as the Annual Superintendents Back-to-School Conference.)

Superintendents and charter school directors are invited to bring their leadership teams. We have a great day and a half planned for you. Our keynote speaker is Tony Wagner, author of The Global Achievement Gap. As you know, Minnesota's demographics are shifting rapidly and we can no longer economically or morally accept leaving 40 percent of our students behind. Hopefully, together we can find the answers to improve achievement for all students, especially those who have historically underachieved. Register your team today!

• Legislative Changes Under the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act (PSEO)

Please see the attached memorandum from Jessica Espinosa, Dual Enrollment specialist, regarding the new legislation passed under Minnesota Statutes, section 124D.09.

• School Finance Updates

1. Property Tax Shift Year-End Reconciliation Reports for FY 2012 are now available on the MDE website. Use this link to access the reports. Under the School Finance Reports heading, select Minnesota Funding Reports (MFR) System, then click on the drop-down boxes to select your district and the category, IDEAS Year-End Reports. If the link above does not work, go to the MDE home page, select Data Center > Data Reports and Analytics, then scroll down to Minnesota Funding Reports (MFR) System.

The Property Tax Shift Year-End Reconciliation Report is final and should agree with the 2011-12 Property Tax Shift spreadsheet that has just been posted to the MDE website. Use this link to access the 2011-12 Property Tax Shift spreadsheet. If this link does not work, from the MDE home page, select School Support > School Finance > Levy Certification Process.

The spreadsheet shows the journal entries for recording the property tax shift on the lower portion of the Report tab. You will need to enter the amount of your May through June tax collections in the green shaded area of the Funds tab of the spreadsheet for the entry to be correct. Please read the instructions included on the first tab of the spreadsheet prior to using the report and tax shift entries features.

2. The Levy Information System is not available at this time.  Login attempts will result in an "Invalid" error message. We anticipate the system being available by August 2, 2012.  We will send notices out via listserv to the business managers and superintendents once the system is up.


• Getting on Board with Community Schools: A Minnesota Conversation – August 15, 2012

A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities. Schools become centers of the community and are open to everyone – all day, every day, evenings and weekends.

Using public schools as hubs, community schools bring together many partners to offer a range of supports and opportunities to children, youth, families and communities. Follow this link for more information about Community Schools.

Consider attending this FREE statewide meeting on Community Schools. With funding provided by the United Way, there will be no charge to attendees.

What: A presentation and dialogue with Marty Blank, National Director of the Coalition for Community Schools. Topic discussions to serve as a springboard for developing a statewide Community Schools network, which will provide resources and technical assistance for those interested in implementing this model. The benefits of this model are vast and have proven to help in eliminating barriers that our students, families, and community face.

Suggested attendees:  School superintendents; principals; teachers; school board members; local and state policy makers; community-based youth, family, and neighborhood organizations; philanthropic leaders; parent/family leadership; and early childhood organizations.
