Commissioner’s Dialogue with Superintendents – Monday, November 19 Conference Call

School district superintendents are invited to participate in the monthly dialogue via audio conference call with Commissioner Brenda Cassellius. The next conference call is scheduled for Monday, November 19, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Call-in instructions will be e-mailed to you 2-3 days prior to the conference call.

Direct Certification Minnesota Automated Reporting Student System (MARSS) Warning Message

See the memorandum from Commissioner Brenda Cassellius regarding the Minnesota Department of Education’s Direct Certification process and a new warning message used to notify school districts of students who can be reported as eligible for free school meals.

American Indian Education Resolution Forms due December 15, 2012

Compliance with Minnesota Statutes, section 124D.78, requires that school districts that enroll ten or more American Indian students complete the following Transmittal of Resolution documents each school year.

Access the 2012-13 Transmittal of Resolution Form and Parent Committee Roster

Access the Parent Committee Resolution and supporting documents, as applicable

These forms and further information are available on the Minnesota Department of Education – Indian Education Web page. Please note that the district needs to convene a parent meeting in order to complete the forms. The completed forms should be mailed via U.S. Postal service to: Office of Indian Education, Minnesota Department of Education, 1500 Highway 36 West, Roseville, MN 55113. Forms are due no later than December 15, 2012. Remember to keep a copy for your files.

Compulsory Instruction Compliance Data Reporting – Due December 31, 2012

See the memorandum regarding Compulsory Instruction Compliance Data Reporting. Minnesota Statutes, sections 120A.22-120A.26, related to Compulsory Instruction, require school superintendents to report annually to the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) on the numbers of students, by age, who reside in each district and attend nonpublic schools or homeschools. This data must be further broken down by the numbers of students whose school situation is considered by the superintendent to be in compliance with the Minnesota Compulsory Instruction law versus those considered not in compliance. The reporting deadline is December 31, 2012. See further information and access to the compulsory instruction compliance data reporting system.

Minnesota Board of Teaching Licensure Actions

The Minnesota Board of Teaching has taken the following licensure actions:

Lightner, Larry (FF 361545) On November 9, 2012, the Board of Teaching adopted a Stipulation Agreement suspending Mr. Lightner’s teaching license for four years and until he meets other requirements imposed by the Board.

Vavra, Christopher (FF# 454507) On November 15, 2012, Mr. Vavra’s teaching license was permanently revoked.

Wangberg, John T. (FF 248284) On November 9, 2012, the Board of Teaching adopted a Stipulation Agreement whereby Mr. Wangberg agrees not to teach unless he meets other requirements imposed by the Board.
