An updated message from Commissioner Cassellius regarding the adoption of new social studies standards

Dear Colleagues,

This week, new social studies standards that were developed and unanimously approved by a committee of educators, parents, and business and government representatives were approved by Governor Dayton. The formal rulemaking process is nearly complete and while lengthy, it is a rigorous and fair mechanism to ensure all voices are heard and considered.

I would like to extend my gratitude to all of the interested teachers, school leaders, citizens and scholars who contributed to the final standards, and to those who provided feedback during the hearing process. A few important steps remain in the formal rulemaking process before the proposed academic standards in Social Studies are formally adopted by the state, hopefully within the next several weeks. Once the standards are formally adopted, all of us at MDE look forward to working with teachers and schools to begin implementing standards that will help Minnesota students gain the skills and knowledge they need for success in college, career and life.

Please see the April 16 press release for further information.

As always, thank you for everything you do on behalf of Minnesota students.

Brenda Cassellius

Commissioner
