This year, schools have another great media photo opportunity—swimming with the sharks at the Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium at Mall of America! School principals are invited to register for a very limited number of spaces. Both morning and afternoon sessions include a 20-minute out-of-water lesson, then get the wetsuits on and get in the water to snorkel with the sharks. Principals are invited to bring along a “shark squad” of students and staff to cheer them on and capture pictures and video to share on social networks. Team members are also encouraged to wear t-shirts, make signs and have FUN. The “shark squad” team gets into the Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium for free. There are a limited number of time spaces available, so register today on the Give MN website. A random drawing will be conducted to fill the available slots. Schools are eligible to compete for prizes.
Registration is now open! Five regional leadership summits have been scheduled in December for Pathways to Postsecondary: Aligning systems through postsecondary partnerships for student success.
The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) invite you to assemble a secondary or postsecondary team to deepen your common understandings of newly enacted legislation and to explore opportunities for new or expanded partnerships between our systems that will better prepare our continuum of learners to be career and college-ready. Please share this opportunity with your secondary principals.

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) received a five-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention titled: Promoting Adolescent Health Through School-Based HIV/STD Prevention. MDE will partner with experts to provide professional development, resources and individualized technical assistance for 15 Minnesota partner school districts that want to improve their school-based HIV/STD and pregnancy prevention efforts.
MDE will describe the opportunity in full through individualized district meetings this fall. Participating districts will work with MDE during a planning phase to determine priorities in three areas of focus. Districts are required to sign a memorandum of understanding by February 1, 2014, for resources and supports to build capacity during the grant period, ending in July 2018. See more information on the HIV/STI Prevention Web page.
To be considered for this opportunity, interested districts must schedule a meeting with HIV/STI Prevention State Coordinator Amy Marsicano (651-582-8393).
