DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AWARDS CAREER PATHWAYS GRANT TO EIGHT MINNESOTA PROGRAMS

Grants to support programs that help students attain industry-recognized skill certificate or credential

Roseville - The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) announced today eight grants totaling nearly $155,000 have been awarded to Minnesota education programs. The grants will help students attain an industry-recognized skill certificate or credential.

“The future holds new challenges that require us to find more rigorous and innovative ways to educate Minnesota students,” Minnesota Education Commissioner Seagren said. “The programs receiving the career pathway grants provide that needed innovation and rigor.”

Under Governor Tim Pawlenty’s leadership and with the assistance of a $2 million National Governors Association grant, the Department of Education has embarked upon a number of initiatives designed to:

• Improve high school rigor for students

• Improve high school student transitions to postsecondary education

• Implement a P-16 system of accountability for student success

• Improve teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)

• Coordinate P-16 governance for education

As a part of that NGA grant, the Department of Education awarded the career pathways grants for the purpose of “developing or expanding secondary career and technical education programs that lead to the attainment of an industry-recognized skill or credential.” All of the programs feature local and regional partnerships between education, higher education and business.
