MINNESOTA-CHINA PARTNERSHIP GROWS

Agreement Will Allow up to 10 Chinese Educators to Help Build Capacity in Chinese Language
Education

Roseville – The Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) and the Minnesota State Department of Education (MDE) have agreed to recruit up to 10 Chinese educators to teach in Minnesota schools each year over the next five years. This collaboration will provide opportunities to improve the quality and depth of Chinese language and cultural education for Minnesota students while developing the educational foundation necessary for students to succeed in the 21st century global marketplace.

“This agreement will expand Chinese language opportunities for Minnesota students so they can obtain the skills necessary for success in an economy where interculturalism will be an essential element,” said Education Commissioner Alice Seagren. “As we build upon the Minnesota-China partnership, we look forward to strengthening the ties between the citizens of our respective communities.”

Minnesota students who enroll in classes made possible by this partnership will gain access to high-quality and multicultural education that trains them for future personal, academic and professional success.

In addition, this agreement will foster the sharing of knowledge and culture between Minnesota and China. The Memorandum of Understanding signed by MDE and Hanban is consistent with the Minnesota-China Partnership between the state of Minnesota and China established in 2005 and discussed by Governor Tim Pawlenty and China’s Ambassador, Zhou Wenzhong. Through this agreement, an education model and the necessary teacher capacity will be built to continue robust Chinese language and cultural education in years to come.

MDE will work in close coordination with the Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota to provide training for visiting teachers, address the current U.S. educational and cultural situation and provide tips on how to live in Minnesota and other information necessary for a smooth transition to teaching in Minnesota schools.

“Visiting teachers selected by MDE and Hanban will be well-prepared and qualified to teach in Minnesota schools and promote high-quality academic standards for students learning Chinese language and culture,” said John Melick, Director of Educator Licensing. “We look forward to inviting and providing support for Minnesota school districts to participate in this opportunity.”
