Family & Consumer Sciences and Service OccupationsAcademic Excellence :

Family and Consumer Science programs (FACS) help students build and apply problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, communications, literacy and math skills. Programs include interpersonal communications, family systems, human development, parenting, resource management, community service, consumerism, housing and interior design, foods and nutrition, textiles and apparel. Students learn to synthesize knowledge from multiple sources, work cooperatively and apply high standards to their lives.

Service Occupations are occupational programs related to FACS providing training and employment skills to students to prepare them for careers in hospitality service, early childhood and creative design. Hospitality service careers include food preparation, production and services; food science and nutrition; tourism and recreation; and facilities management and maintenance. Early childhood careers include early childhood and guidance education. Creative design careers include textile and apparel; housing; and interiors and furnishing. Service Occupations education:

• applies problem-solving, decision-making, leadership and critical/creative thinking skills to employment and industry issues;
• develops teamwork and communication skills;
• develops technical skills and occupational knowledge;
• transfers academic skills to community and career situations; and,
• prepares students for employment and career opportunities.
