Health Science Education

The Minnesota Department of Education’s approved Health Science Education Programs provide students with the knowledge and technical skills to pursue further education and/or career development options in a variety of health care settings.

Health Careers Promotion Grant.  The Minnesota Departments of Education (MDE) and Health (MDH) are offering grants for education-health employer partnerships. These grants are available to consortiums of health and long-term care employers, school districts and higher education institutions to help develop curriculums that provide career exploration and training in national skill standards for health care and long-term care; align to Minnesota's academic standards; and articulate into postsecondary programs. View Guidelines.

The Health Science Technology Education News is a newsletter designed for Minnesota's health science and technology educators. Each issue will include information on career and technical education policy, health science curriculum, coming events and more. Issues are available on this page.

Courses in this field are aligned with the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards; the National Health Science and Technology Education Foundation Standards; and health career pathways in therapeutics, diagnostics, support services, informatics, and biotechnology research and development. Coursework may lead to industry certifications such as the National Certificate of Proficiency in Health Care Foundation Standards, CPR/First Aid, Emergency Medical, Dental Assisting and Certified Nursing Assistant.

Health Science Education programs emphasize the integration of technical skills, mathematics, science and communications and provide students with work-based learning activities such as job shadowing, internships and apprenticeships. Students are able to acquire leadership skills and professional development opportunities through membership in the Health Science Education Student Organization (HOSA).

The State Health Science Education Specialist is responsible for program approval and technical assistance.
