Mathematics

The Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Mathematics define a common foundation of mathematics to be learned by all students. They articulate concepts in reasoning; number sense, computation and operations; patterns, functions and algebra; data analysis, statistics and probability; and spatial sense, geometry and measurement. Three high school credits that encompass the content contained in the mathematics standards for grades 9-11 are required for graduation.

CLEP Exam Timeline. Minnesota high school students have until June 30, 2008, to take up to six free College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®) exams as part of the “Get Ready, Get Credit” initiative. The testing window for the 2008-09 school year is October 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009. This program allows students to earn college credit while still in high school by earning qualifying scores on exams, saving families significant money on college tuition. Read the CLEP: Quick Start for Mathematics Students below for more information.

The State of Minnesota has been engaged in a variety of efforts to ensure that students finish their K-12 education with the knowledge and skills to meet the demands of successful participation in higher education and the workforce, including focused efforts to improve preparation in mathematics and science for all students. A key strategy undergirding Minnesota’s efforts to prepare students will be the development of regionally based centers that provide professional development and technical assistance to support K-12 teachers and schools districts in delivering high quality mathematics and science instruction. An advisory task force submitted their recommendations in Report on Teacher Academies: Math and Science (TAMS) Advisory Task Force, available below.  View Math and Science Teacher Academy Grant Opportunity.

Math Standards Revision
The final draft of the Mathematics standards revision document is available now. The document reflects months of work by Minnesota's math standards revision committee and the technical writing team and incorporates suggestions provided by national mathematics experts. The final Math Standards Revision document is currently in the rulemaking process. Once this process is complete, the word "Draft" will be taken off of the 2007 standards document and a note will appear on this page.

The 2003 Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Mathematics document is also available below (titled "Mathematics Standards") in Word and PDF formats.
