Adolescent literacy has received a lot of attention in the past decade. There has been some really interesting research and policy developed, based on the concept that learning to read is a life-long endeavor.

Alliance for Excellent Education
The Alliance for Excellent Education is a national policy and advocacy organization that works to make every child a high school graduate—to prepare them for college, for work, and to be contributing members of society. The Alliance has published many research reports that can help parents and educators become more informed about the literacy needs of secondary students.

Adolescents and Literacy: Reading for the 21st Century

This report examines the reliable, empirical research that exists on how to improve the literacy of children in grades 4 through 12. It brings together the key findings of the best available research on issues related to adolescent literacy. The report demonstrates that we already know a great deal about reading comprehension and about effective methods for helping students of all ages become better readers.

Striving Readers
Striving Readers is a grant program developed by the U.S. Department of Education in response to the overwhelming literacy needs of secondary students. Goals of the initiative are to raise student achievement in middle and high schools by improving the literacy skills of struggling adolescent readers, and to help build a strong, scientific research base around specific strategies that improve adolescent literacy skills.
