Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) Grants Announced
Lakes International Receives Major Federal Grant for Innovative Language Programs
FOREST LAKE, MN – Lakes International Language Academy has been awarded a major federal grant to strengthen the school’s K-6 Spanish language immersion curriculum and introduce Mandarin Chinese, announced Kristine Cohn, a senior official for the U.S. Department of Education. Ms. Cohn, who directly represents U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, congratulated the school on its language program at an assembly of students, teachers and school officials held in the new gymnasium of the Lakes International facility in Forest Lake, Minnesota.
Ms. Cohn presented a commemorative check for $264,946, which represents the grant’s first-year funding to the school. Director Cameron Hedlund and Lakes International board members accepted the check. The grant, totaling over $800,000 for a three-year period, is one of the largest awards in the history of the U.S. Department of Education’s Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP).
Twin Cities German Immersion School Receives USDE Grant
SAINT PAUL - It is time to celebrate at Twin Cities German Immersion School. While the K-2nd grade children were busy observing and discussing, in German, about the what happens to chocolate in the sun, how many species of plants are in a meadow, when best to harvest school grown organic vegetables, and why multiplication and division are a lot like addition and subtraction, their innovative immersion program received a 2007 Foreign Language Assistance Program grant. The grant will add $450,000 to the school's budget over the next three years.
Twin Cities German Immersion School (TCGIS) FLAP funding will expand and improve the existing 90:10 German immersion program by developing an international curriculum; enhancing academic achievement by integrating a fine arts component; improving the ability of teachers to support the curriculum; expanding the native intern program, and increasing student opportunities to communicate with native speakers through a web partnership with a German elementary school.
