National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
NAEP, also known as the “Nation’s Report Card,” is the only national assessment of what students know and can do in various subject areas. NAEP assesses students in:
Mathematics Writing Geography
Reading The Arts Economics
Science Civics U.S. History
NAEP is given to a representative sample of students in each State. Therefore individual scores for students, schools or districts are not reported. Data is only reported out at the State and National level.
The Main NAEP includes assessments in all 9 subjects following frameworks set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). These assessments are given in grades 4, 8 and 12 although not all subjects and grades are assessed each year. Only Mathematics, Reading, Science and Writing are reported at the State level, all other subjects are reported at the National level only.
The Long-Term Trend NAEP is given nationally in Mathematics and Reading. This study has data back to 1970 and assesses students at age 9, 13 and 17 every four years. Other NAEP Studies include the High School Transcript Study, the National Indian Education Survey and other studies.
More in-depth information about the NAEP program is available on the National Center for Education Statistics website. There you’ll find information on school participation in NAEP; information for parents, educators, and researchers; sample questions and data tools; technical documentation; and the history of NAEP.
