Mediator/Facilitator Selection Process

Mediator/Facilitator Selection Process

MNSEMS uses only experienced mediators who are then trained in special education issues and the IEP process. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds including work in law enforcement, government, ministry, restorative justice, education, law, organizational development and research, and mediation training. Their mediation and facilitation experiences may include assistance with issues with farmer-lender, family, business, EEOC and human rights, vocational rehabilitation, Minnesota workplace, restorative justice and community programs.

There are eleven Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practitioners on the MNSEMS roster; five live in the Twin Cities area and six live in Greater Minnesota. The facilitators are assigned within their geographic location. In an effort to reduce state costs for mediator's travel time and expenses, both parties are asked if they would approve the mediator living closest to the district. If that person is not available, the next person in the rotation is assigned. The parties have the right to jointly request a specific mediator.
