About FNS

The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) administers U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Child Nutrition Programs.  Services provided to schools, child care institutions, summer feeding agencies include:

  • Approving applications for program participation
  • Assisting sponsors with claiming reimbursement for meals, milk and snacks served
  • Distributing USDA donated commodity foods
  • Interpreting federal and state regulations and policies
  • Disseminating program information through newsletters, memorandums and workshops
  • Providing technical assistance through training and onsite visits
  • Promoting activities that support USDA nutrition programs
