School Wellness

School Wellness

Wellness is a comprehensive approach that incorporates the integrated domains of human development to address physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and social well-being. A comprehensive assessment of the school environment is a critical step in examining these inter-relationships.

Student Wellness

A school wellness framework is often defined as whole child education and it supports the development of students who are healthy, knowledgeable, motivated, engaged and connected. Student wellness addresses the developmental needs of young people and the variety of risk and protective factors that influence their health, behavior and learning.

Staff Wellness

Staff wellness is essential to create a healthy school environment and to contain employee health care costs. Staff wellness programs have been shown to improve staff morale, create positive role modeling, increase productivity, decrease absenteeism and build staff commitment to promote the health of students.

Local Wellness Policy

The phrase ‘local wellness policy’ was recently adopted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in legislation passed to combat childhood obesity. Public Law 108-265, Section 204 requires each School Food Authority that participates in USDA’s school meals program to establish a local wellness policy. At the Minnesota Department of Education, school wellness policy development is supported by a cross-agency team led by staff from Food and Nutrition Services – see the related links for more information.
