Positive Behavioral Interventions and SupportsLearning Support :

Minnesota School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (MN SW-PBIS) is a state-initiated project that provides districts and individual schools throughout Minnesota with the necessary training and technical support to promote improvement in student behavior across the entire school especially for students with challenging social behaviors. It does this by establishing clearly defined outcomes that relate to students’ academic and social behavior, systems that support staff efforts, practices that support student success, and data to guide decision-making. The SW-PBIS approach uses research based interventions which are focused systematically for “all,” “some” and a “few” students, depending on need, making it a model of efficiency.

Minnesota began SW-PBIS in the 2005-06 school-year and trained staff from nine schools. A comparison between the 2004-05 and 2005-06 school years in Princeton Schools, one of the participating schools, showed: 45% decrease in failing grades, 25% decrease in office referrals, 30% decrease in bus referrals and a 50% decrease in out of school suspensions
